Everyone, please step into my brand spanking new powder room! This room is so special to me primarily because we fought so hard to add it to our home. The building and development department at the City of Vancouver kept throwing obstacles in our way before we could get this tiny little 3’x6′ room built. Don’t get me started on them… let’s just summarize by saying they are a HUGE headache to work with.
The important thing is that it’s done and I can finally present it to you.
Just off the kitchen, there is this extended room, which doesn’t work as a kitchen space and is too small to be a breakfast room or dining area, so we just call it “the nook.” As it was too small to function as a proper room, I thought we could easily carve out a bit of space for a much needed second bathroom, but too small for a full bath, so a half bath I designed. I had entertained the idea of installing a drain hole in the floor, tile the walls and attach a handheld shower to the water pipes to create an enclosed shower room that would include a toilet and sink à la Korea-style, but Mr. M would have none of it.
Oh, didn’t you know I lived in Korea for a year? Well, I did. I taught English there to elementary age kids. And Mr. M and I kept a long-distance relationship and it was all really nice and memorable and stuff…. I digress.
Here’s the nook as it looked when we bought the house, before we moved in (meaning: none of the finishes and furnishes are ours):
And then during the rough-in and framing phase:
In another post, I will show you what the outside of the powder room looks like, but for now, let’s enter this tiny room and see how our new room addition turned out:
The concept behind this room was Provençal chic. A custom vanity, antique mirrors, decorative baseboard and crown, and checkerboard floor pull this look together.
I spent a bit of time hunting for an antique dresser or console that I could repurpose into a vanity, but everything I came across were too large, too small, too expensive, or just not the right style. So, in true Planq Studio fashion, I made it work by designing my own with a couple of turned legs and maple planks.
Did you notice the black ceiling? Initially, it was painted white like the walls, but after everything was installed, I thought the room needed a bit more warmth and punch. The ceiling was spray painted in metallic black. It’s hard to tell in this photo, but in person, the ceiling has a bit of sparkle to it.
Do you recognize the custom art on the wall? You can find details about it in this post:

Initially, the floors were going to be laid in 2″ black and white hexagon tiles. As I researched the Provençal concept, I noticed the more popular use of large checkerboard patterned floors. The tiles chosen here have a subtle grain pattern to them – similar to marble graining. It’s so subtle that they didn’t show up in the photograph very well.
This concludes our tour. What do you think of our new room? Do you have any nightmare construction jobs to share? Please tell! Thanks for stopping by!
