Don’t you hate when you try to paint stripes, they yield horrible results? The colors bleed out no matter how well you’ve taped. I’ve tried all the painter’s tapes out there (even the really “good ones”) and they still bleed. Well, I’ve learned the secret trick to painting perfect stripes! I looooove the stripes I painted in my entry and I want to show you how to get the same results.
Supply List
• Base paint color
• Accent paint color + more paint colors, if you choose
• Level – a large one is better than a teensy one
• Pencil
• Tape measure
• Painter’s tape (doesn’t matter which color)
• Roller brush
• Paint tray and liner
• Small paint brush (just in case)
Step-by-Step
Step 1
After you’ve chosen your color combination, choose one color as your “base color.” For the purposes of simplicity for this tutorial, I will discuss the use of only two colors. The second color will be known as your “accent color.” My base color shown in these photos is white. The accent color is gray. Paint out your wall(s) entirely in the base color. Let dry thoroughly.
After the base color is dry, tape out where you want your stripes to be. You will need a level, pencil, and tape measure (if your level doesn’t have a ruler) to complete this step.
DESIGN TIP: For a more traditional look, go for narrow stripes. For a more modern look, go for wider stripes.
Step 2
This step is optional, but I found it helpful to label which color was going where after I taped. I can get a little cross-eyed doing this detail work sometime, so I found this necessary for me.
Step 3
This is the most crucial step, SO DO NOT SKIP STEP 3. If you skip this step, the accent color will bleed into the base color and you won’t get the crisp lines. To avoid bleeding, paint the base color OVER the tape where the it meets the accent color. You are not painting the entire section – just where the line of the tape is. Make sure there are no pocket holes that the accent color will be able to bleed through.
Step 4
After the base color on the tape dries thoroughly, paint the accent color in the area where you intend it to go. You will have to recall your elementary school coloring habits and paint inside the lines! Don’t paint into the base color area or else you’ll be doing more touch ups.
After the accent color dries, pull off the tape. You should have crisp, straight lines. IF any accent color bled through, just touch up with a small paint brush.
Stand back and beam proudly at the perfect stripes you’ve just painted! It’s a really simple process to get crisp lines every time!
I still have to get my entry pulled together. Ugh! In time, my friend! Can’t wait to get it done and give you a tour. Until next time, happy painting!
